Alcatraz

For flingers who are spending a longer time in SF, a visit to Alcatraz might be of interest.

As of 2003, the gardens on the island are overseen by the Garden Conservancy, The Golden Gate Parks Conservancy, and the National Park Service.

Tours and garden visits are available. The entry fee is the cost of the ferry to the island. Tickets are best purchased in advance, as tours regularly sell out.

Book ferry passage here.

Read about the history of the gardens, and about tours and planning a visit here.

And don't forget to leave room in your luggage for a t shirt.

Mailing

Fling attendees have a full itinerary for their weekend in San Francisco. Tote bags full of surprises await, as well as a city full of desirable items.

? ? ? ? ?

Those flingers who will be staying longer than the weekend will have opportunities to mail home their accumulated loot; those here for just the weekend will have to tote home their tote bags themselves.

The downtown post office branch near the hotel is open Monday through Friday:
150 Sutter St
San Francisco, CA

The downtown UPS office is also open Monday through Friday:
588 Sutter St
San Francisco, CA

There is also a tiny post office in the basement of Macys department store on Union Square, whose existence is Brigadoon-like, and not know by many people. Legend says it's open on the weekend.

Dress code

For fling attendees who live in or around San Francisco, or for those who have spent time here, our summer weather will be no surprise. New visitors should come prepared.

Mediterranean climate zones, as classified, are found on west coasts around the world at particular latitudes. The typical weather pattern is, roughly, six rainy months and six dry months, with mild, wet winters and warm, or hot, dry summers.
Despite what some people may bemoan, we do have seasons, but their patterns are dictated by our climate type. We'll not have your fall hardwood colors, or snow-bound winters, and you'll not have our figs, olives or grapes.

San Francisco has a modified Mediterranean climate, due to its location and setting. Our summer-cold coastal surface waters create our signature fog, and our hot interior valleys to the east, where hot air rises, pull cooler air inland to replace the rising air and contribute our summer winds.

Here's an informational graphic that can better illustrate the cycles:

What this means on a practical level is: bring outerwear. Your weekend may be fog-bound and windy. Some days the fog barely recedes. If you go out on a boat in the bay, it can be even windier and colder.

If a high-pressure system parks itself off shore, we will have pleasantly warm sunny days that may even become hot.

While San Francisco may be fog bound, weather in nearby locations may be significantly warmer and clearer, as in the east or south bay.

As attendees, fantastic tote bags are in your future, so you will have a stylish place to stash your layers when the sun comes out.

If you're looking for something to do Thursday night...

Our Garden Bloggers Fling group has been invited to the wonderfully creative house of landscape designer Shirley Watts for a get together the night before the Fling is to start. We were unfortunately unable to get Shirley's garden on the tour for the days of the Fling but she kindly offered to have those of us who can make it over for a little shin-dig the evening of Thursday, June 27th. Her garden is in Alameda (across the Bay from San Francisco) so we'll need to do some carpooling or public transportation to get there.

If you are in town and aren't too pooped from your travels come join us! The party will be from 6:00-9:00 in the evening. We're also asking a contribution of $10 or so for Shirley to help offset the cost of the food and drinks.

If you would like to come to Shirley's please RSVP to me at kelly@floradoragardens.com so we can get a headcount and organize transportation.

Hope you can come!
